Nas palavras do próprio Standish Lawder, a ideia para NECROLOGY, um absorvente plano-sequência propenso às mais variadas e legítimas interpretações sobre a condição humana dos nossos tempos, nasceu quando o realizador filmou uma escada rolante lotada no Grand Central Station, em Nova Iorque. A acidental mudança do interruptor de um projector para o reverse resultou na inversão do movimento descendente da multidão e, então, «a imagem revelou-se admirável e milagrosamente poética, ganhando toda uma nova dimensão e sentido».

In Standish Lawder's own words, the idea for NECROLOGY, an absorbing long shot prone to a wide and legitimate range of interpretations about nowadays human condition, was born after filming a crowded escalator in Grand Central Station, in New York city. The accidental flipping of a projector's switch to reverse ended in the inversion of the crowd's downward movement and, then, «the image became wonderfully, miraculously, poetic, taking a totally new dimension and new meaning.»
