The Short Guide to Nathaniel Dorsky - Part II

A different light.
It is in the way the light fixes itself in the Kodachrome emulsion that the work of Nathaniel Dorsky stands out. With any symbolisms nor potential narratives that can be extracted from the images — the author made it quickly clear before the screening of his films at Cinemateca Portuguesa —, the revelation is made through the demonstration of the qualities and limitations of the 16mm format that he uses in his
oeuvre, with a game of colours, lights and shapes stringed together without apparent method or philosophy, only pure instinct. And then there is the ruling silence of his films in a projection room, a kind of muteness that modern audiences seem unaware of how to interpret it. Nathaniel Dorsky's experimental cinema may not be the most enwraping around, but nobody will deny it the label of unique experience.
